A Northern lights themed label for an Alaskan brewery, taking an illustrative approach to create a narrative driven design for their brand.

The ideation phase.

After settling on a Northern Lights theme, the next step was initial sketches and concepts. I quickly decided to have the Aurora Borealis personified as the figure of a woman with the lights streaming out as her hair, and sketched out numerous layouts before settling on the final concept.

Production phase

The hair is a definitive element of the Aurora design, with the lights intended to wrap around and illuminate the can to draw the eye. This proved to translate well to t shirts as well, with the design wrapping around the sleeve.

Finding the right typeface for such a busy illustration presented a challenge in wanting it to stand out but not overpower the composition. I wanted text that would wrap around the hair and emulate the shapes found throughout the piece, so eventually I lettered and handset type with an added grain to meld with the pink “haze” of the illustration.
